The Minister of Basic Education announced last week that the refined curriculum statement (CAPS) would not be introduced in 2011.  They will be implemented in the Foundation Phase, as well as all other phases, in 2012.  Teachers are, therefore, advised to continue with their planning for 2011 based on the current curriculum and assessment statements.  [...]

Heartiest congratulations to the compilers of the document for a brave, bold breakaway from the vague waffle of the existing curriculum. The draft revised version is clear, succinct and use-friendly. It is also so, so pleasing to see the abolition of the LOs and ASs! I have looked at the draft and have some concerns, particularly – but not solely – in connection with the fourth skill, viz ‘Language structures and use’.

It has been said that English is one of the hardest languages to learn to speak and spell correctly. The poem ‘The Chaos’ represents a virtuoso feat of composition, a mammoth catalogue of about 800 of the most notorious irregularities of traditional English orthography, skilfully versified (if with a few awkward lines) into couplets with alternating feminine and masculine rhymes. You should find this both entertaining and useful for teaching spelling and homophones.
